The practical answer

A Way Out Co-op & Multiplayer

A Way Out is co-op only and requires exactly two human players from beginning to end. The same campaign works as couch co-op on one PC, PS4, or Xbox One, or as online co-op between two systems of the same platform type. Its presentation remains split-screen in both modes, so each partner can follow what Leo and Vincent are doing at the same time.

Can you play on one screen?

Couch co-op uses split screen

Players can share one system, with A Way Out dividing the display for each player.

What works online?

Join remotely with 2 players

Friends can complete the cooperative experience online. Check the crossplay, copy, account, and subscription details below before choosing platforms.

Is there a solo option?

Bring another human player

No. The campaign has no solo mode or AI partner; a second human player is required for every session.

Does A Way Out support crossplay?

A Way Out does not support cross-platform play. PC, PlayStation, and Xbox players cannot join one another, including through Friend Pass. EA's current support guide says the invited player must use the same type of platform as the owner.

PC and PS4

Not supported. EA requires online partners to use the same type of platform.

PC and Xbox One

Not supported. EA requires online partners to use the same type of platform.

PS4 and Xbox One

Not supported. Friend Pass does not bridge PlayStation and Xbox.

Cross-generation support

EA lists native versions for PC, PS4, and Xbox One and does not document a cross-generation pairing for A Way Out. The PlayStation Store says the PS4 version is playable on PS5 through backward compatibility, with a warning that some PS4 features may be absent; that is not a separate PS5 edition or evidence of cross-generation online support.

What your group needs before playing

How many copies does your group need?

1 copy with Friend Pass

Couch co-op needs one full copy on the shared system and two controllers. Online co-op can use two full copies or one full copy plus the free Friend Pass trial for the invited partner. Both online players need accounts on the same platform type; console players also need the online membership required by that platform. Steam also offers Remote Play Together from one purchased copy.

Can one owner bring a guest?

Yes, with Friend Pass

Yes. One full-game owner can invite one person on the same type of platform to download the free trial and play the complete online campaign. The owner sends the invitation from the in-game menu.

Which online memberships apply?

Console online membership

Local couch play does not require an online subscription. EA's current Friend Pass guide says both console players need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core for online co-op. PC does not require a paid platform multiplayer subscription.

Who is A Way Out good for?

  • Pairs sharing one screen
  • Friends using one purchased copy
