The best crossplay co-op game depends on the people and systems in your group. Split Fiction is the strongest two-player choice, Overcooked! All You Can Eat works best for a flexible party of up to four, Baldur's Gate 3 suits a long shared campaign, and Big Walk is the standout option for groups larger than four.

Every game here has confirmed crossplay between at least three platform families, but the overlap is not identical. An Xbox player cannot join Big Walk because there is no Xbox version, for example, while a Switch player cannot join Baldur's Gate 3. Check the exact systems before anyone buys.

Crossplay applies to online sessions. Local co-op is a separate option for people sharing one system; it does not make an unsupported platform compatible. If that distinction is unclear, read crossplay versus cross-generation play before choosing.

How these games were selected

This is a practical shortlist, not a popularity ranking. Each selection had to meet all of these criteria:

  • the publisher or developer currently confirms crossplay for the relevant co-op mode;
  • the supported platform combinations are specific enough to check before buying;
  • the game fills a different group need rather than repeating another recommendation;
  • player count, copy rules, accounts, and major setup limits can be verified from first-party information; and
  • the game is available now.

The most important filter is fit. A two-player pair should not choose a 12-player game merely because it accepts a larger lobby, and a mixed PC-and-Xbox group should eliminate any game without an Xbox version before comparing genres.

Split Fiction: best crossplay co-op game for two players

Split Fiction co-op details make it the simplest recommendation for two people who want a story-driven action adventure on different modern systems. PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 players can connect in supported combinations. The campaign always requires exactly two human players, so there is no uncertainty about filling extra party slots or managing an AI companion.

Its biggest buying advantage is Friend's Pass. One person buys the full game, the other installs the free guest version, and the pair can complete the online campaign together. Cross-platform invitations use EA Accounts, and console players still need the multiplayer membership required by their system.

Choose Split Fiction when:

  • your group is exactly two people;
  • the players own different supported current-generation systems;
  • you want a focused campaign built entirely around cooperation; or
  • you want to avoid buying a second full copy.

Do not choose it for a group of three or more. It also has no native PS4, Xbox One, or original Switch version. The complete Split Fiction setup guide covers Friend's Pass, couch play, subscriptions, EA Accounts, and Switch 2 GameShare.

Overcooked! All You Can Eat: best for two to four players and older consoles

Overcooked! All You Can Eat co-op details cover the widest hardware range in this list. Team17 confirms crossplay among Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, with story levels available cross-platform.

It is also the easiest option here to reshape around attendance. Two, three, or four people can tackle short kitchen stages, and up to four local players can share one system when the group meets in person. That makes it a useful choice for households that alternate between couch sessions and online sessions, although every system connecting online needs access to the All You Can Eat edition.

The edition name matters. A player launching the separate Overcooked! 2 release cannot join an All You Can Eat lobby just because both games contain familiar levels. Team17 accounts and the in-game friends system handle cross-platform invitations.

Choose Overcooked! All You Can Eat when:

  • your group changes between two, three, and four players;
  • someone still uses PS4, Xbox One, or the original Switch;
  • you prefer short, replayable stages to a long campaign; or
  • local co-op is as important as online crossplay.

Baldur's Gate 3: best for a long cross-platform campaign

Baldur's Gate 3 co-op details are the best match for two to four players who want decisions, tactical battles, character building, and a campaign that can continue over many sessions. Patch 8 added full crossplay among PC and Mac, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S through the Larian Network.

The host keeps the campaign save, so choose someone who can reliably return for future sessions. Every online system needs its own copy or licensed access, and every cross-platform player needs a free Larian Account linked to the relevant platform account. If the party uses mods, compatible versions of the same mods must be available and installed for everyone joining.

Choose Baldur's Gate 3 when:

  • two to four people want a persistent role-playing campaign;
  • the group is split across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series;
  • players enjoy slower tactical combat and consequential choices; or
  • the same host can keep the shared save available.

It has no Switch, Switch 2, PS4, or Xbox One version. It is also a larger time commitment than the other recommendations, so agree on a regular host and session schedule before starting.

Big Walk: best crossplay co-op game for large groups

Big Walk co-op details solve a problem the other games cannot: keeping more than four friends in one cooperative adventure. The game supports two to 12 online players across PC and Mac, PS5, and Switch 2. Friends can join with an in-game Join Code, including across platform families.

Big Walk is built around proximity voice and text communication. Distance, obstacles, and in-game tools affect who can hear or read each other, so an outside voice call can bypass part of the intended puzzle design. There is no public matchmaking, no local co-op, and no full single-player mode. The host owns the save and must return when the group wants to continue.

Choose Big Walk when:

  • five to 12 friends need one shared co-op session;
  • the group uses PC, PS5, and Switch 2;
  • communication puzzles are part of the appeal; or
  • everyone can organize around the same returning host.

Every player and device needs access to the game. Big Walk is not available on Xbox, PS4, or the original Switch, so a group containing any of those systems needs another option.

Which game fits your exact group?

Use player count first, then eliminate incompatible systems:

  • Two people: choose Split Fiction for a focused adventure and one-copy Friend's Pass setup; choose Baldur's Gate 3 for a longer, open-ended campaign.
  • Three or four people: choose Overcooked! All You Can Eat for short sessions and broad hardware support; choose Baldur's Gate 3 for a persistent RPG party.
  • Five to 12 people: Big Walk is the only game on this list that holds the whole group, but Xbox users cannot join.
  • Someone uses PS4 or Xbox One: Overcooked! All You Can Eat is the compatible recommendation here.
  • Someone uses Switch 2: Split Fiction and Big Walk support it; Baldur's Gate 3 does not. Overcooked uses the original Switch release rather than a separate Switch 2 version.
  • You want one purchase for an online pair: Split Fiction is the only selection here with an official Friend's Pass.

After choosing a compatible game, confirm the remaining costs. Crossplay does not remove copy requirements or console multiplayer fees. The guides to how many co-op copies you need and online co-op subscription requirements explain those checks separately.

Check before your group buys

  1. List every exact system, including the console generation.
  2. Confirm that each system has the same compatible game edition.
  3. Match the co-op player limit to everyone who wants to join.
  4. Decide whether the session is online or local; crossplay is an online feature.
  5. Count copies or verify an official guest pass.
  6. Prepare publisher accounts and cross-platform friend lists.
  7. Check the required online membership for each console.
  8. Pick a reliable host when one person controls the shared save.

For most mixed-platform pairs, start with Split Fiction. For three or four players, decide between Overcooked's flexible short sessions and Baldur's Gate 3's long campaign. For larger groups, verify that everyone has PC, PS5, or Switch 2 before committing to Big Walk.
